Potts: Son of former Hammers hero Steve
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce saluted a fine debut from 17-year-old Dan Potts in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Barnsley.
Potts, the son of former Upton Park skipper Steve, was fast-tracked into making his first appearance after the Hammers’ injury problems were compounded when Abdoulaye Faye pulled out in the warm-up.
The rookie defender had only signed his first pro contract earlier in the week, just two years after recovering from leukaemia.
But he shone at left-back as a makeshift Hammers’ defence hung onto Papa Bouba Diop’s early goal to take the points.
“It was a great debut from Pottsy both in defence and in possession,” said Allardyce.
“He has been used to coming and training with the senior players, and of course to perform like that is a great credit to him and his family.”
